Communities On Phone Patrol (C.O.P.P.)
Communities On Phone Patrol is a joint effort of the Halton
Regional Police Service and the citizens of Halton Region.
COPP is a structured program that is supervised by the Halton
Regional Police Service.
The members are volunteers from the community who receive
ongoing training from the Police. The volunteers, working in
groups of two or more people (over the age of 18 years), patrol
selected neighbourhoods, in their own vehicles, looking for
suspicious activities.
Incidents are reported to the police using cellular telephone
supplied to the volunteer.
The role of the COPP volunteer is to “observe
and report” on
crimes they encounter. They are the extra eyes and ears of
the police. The COPP program has successfully assisted with
many types of crimes such as:
- Vandalism
- Break and Enter
- Drug Offences
- Alcohol Offences
- Auto Theft
Volunteers have also been instrumental in locating
missing people and helping stranded motorists. Many times,
these situations
require immediate police response.
The volunteers are not restricted to just patrolling, but
are often utilized at many police and community events, i.e.:
- Fairs and Festivals
- Seatbelt Challenge
- Safety Challenge
- Police Day / Police Work
- Community Radar Board
All volunteers with the COPP program
are required to volunteer a minimum of two shifts per month
(approximately eight hours). COPP volunteer requirements are:
- 19 years and older
- Have fairly good eyesight
- Pass backgrounds check
